Veterinary Assistant Training
Understanding the Difference
The terms certificate, diploma, certification, and permit can sometimes be confusing when researching Veterinary Assistant training. They describe different parts of education and professional practice.
Veterinary Assistant training provides the education and practical preparation students need to develop skills used in veterinary hospitals, clinics, animal shelters, laboratories, and other animal care environments.
At CHAC, Veterinary Assistant training combines online instruction with hands-on campus laboratory work and externship experience.
Students who successfully complete CHAC’s Veterinary Assistant program receive a:Veterinary Assistant DiplomaAlthough prospective students may search online for a “Veterinary Assistant certificate program,” the official educational credential awarded by CHAC is a diploma.
Professional certifications and government permits are separate from the diploma awarded by a school.
California Veterinary Assistants generally work as unlicensed support personnel under appropriate supervision. Certain specialized duties, particularly obtaining or administering controlled substances, require a separate Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substances Permit issued by the California Veterinary Medical Board. California Veterinary Medical Board
California Requirements
California does not generally require a Veterinary Assistant to hold a professional certification simply to work in a Veterinary Assistant role. Veterinary Assistants are considered unlicensed veterinary staff and may perform permitted support duties under the supervision required by California law and regulation. California Veterinary Medical Board
Veterinary Assistants may support veterinarians and veterinary technicians with permitted animal care, hospital, laboratory, and administrative tasks under appropriate supervision.
A Veterinary Assistant who will obtain or administer controlled substances must meet additional California requirements and hold a valid Veterinary Assistant Controlled Substances Permit (VACSP) before performing those duties. California Veterinary Medical Board
Veterinary hospitals, clinics, shelters, specialty practices, and other employers may establish additional hiring or credential requirements for individual positions.
Requirements may change. Students and graduates should review current California Veterinary Medical Board requirements and individual employer expectations.
After Graduation
Completing CHAC’s vet assistant programs provides graduates with a Veterinary Assistant Diploma. Additional credentials or permits depend on the job duties, employer, and applicable regulations.

Students who successfully complete all Veterinary Assistant program requirements receive the Veterinary Assistant Diploma. The program is designed to provide graduates with basic skills necessary to assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians in a variety of animal healthcare settings. California Healing Arts College
Issued by the California Veterinary Medical Board
The VACSP is a separate California permit related specifically to obtaining or administering controlled substances under the supervision and responsibility of a licensed veterinarian. Graduation from CHAC does not automatically provide this permit. Students or graduates whose employment responsibilities require controlled-substance access must separately meet the Veterinary Medical Board’s current application requirements. California Veterinary Medical Board
A Veterinary Assistant Diploma, voluntary professional credential, and California VACSP are different credentials and should not be treated as interchangeable.
